Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy that can be helpful for a number of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and substance use concerns. CBT has been found to improve quality of life. CBT is based on several core principles, including:
Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking.
Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior.
People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives.
In my work with children, it is very important that the family be fully engaged in CBT. Unlike other forms of psychotherapy, CBT required much more client engagement. To be frank, CBT requires a lot of work. Sessions are held weekly to bi-weekly for around 10-12 sessions. A major component of CBT is homework. At the end of a session homework will be assigned. Reflecting on thought patterns and behaviors, practicing coping skills, and tracking symptoms are some of the activities that a child must complete in order to be successful. Additionally, the parent may be asked to complete homework with the client. This homework may focus on improving communication and even the parent challenging thoughts and behaviors. At minimum, the parent will need to encourage and support the child in completing homework.
The hard work of CBT will pay off. With commitment and engagement, the child certainly can improve their mental health symptoms. Additionally, the parent may learn by osmosis.
